GUIDE
AI voice agents by role
An AI voice agent is software that holds a phone conversation: it listens, understands, answers in a natural voice and acts on what it hears. What it should do, and what it must never do, depends on its job. This guide looks at voice agents role by role, using independent research rather than vendor promises.

What every role has in common
- Honesty first. Say it is an AI at the start. Most people want to know, and the EU AI Act requires it from 2 August 2026.
- A clear job. One purpose per agent, written as instructions, with the questions to ask and the boundaries it must not cross.
- A way to a person. Decide who follows up when the agent can't help, and make sure they see it quickly.
- Rules for calling. Calling hours, attempt limits, do-not-call requests and consent apply to every outbound call.
- Evidence. Keep transcripts, recordings and outcomes so you can see what actually happened, not what the agent was supposed to do.
How SAGOT fits
SAGOT is a platform for running voice agents in any of these roles. You write the agent's job, connect a phone line and review every call; your software or AI assistant can do the same through the API, MCP server and CLI. SAGOT is in a closed alpha.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between an AI voice agent and an IVR?
An IVR plays recorded menus and responds to key presses or a few fixed phrases. A voice agent understands open conversation, answers questions in its own words and can take actions, such as recording a booking, within limits you set.
Which role should I start with?
Start where calls are repetitive and the next step is clear: answering common questions, confirming appointments or calling people who asked to hear from you.
