AI VOICE AGENTS BY ROLE
AI voice agents for lead qualification calls
A lead qualification agent calls people who asked to hear from you: someone who filled in a form, requested a quote or registered interest. It introduces itself as an AI assistant, asks a few qualifying questions and books the next step with a person. Its advantage is not a better sales pitch. It is speed, persistence within limits, and consistent notes.

Speed to lead is the whole game
- In an audit of 2,241 US companies, only 37% responded to an online lead within an hour, 24% took more than a day and 23% never responded.
- The same research, covering 1.25 million leads, found companies that tried to reach a lead within an hour were nearly seven times as likely to qualify it as those that waited even one hour longer, and more than 60 times as likely as those that waited a day or more. (One author led a sales software company; treat the multipliers as directional.)
- An earlier study of more than 15,000 leads reported that the odds of reaching a lead fell 100-fold between calling within 5 minutes and calling after 30.
A voice agent can call within minutes of a form being submitted, at any hour your calling rules allow.
Getting an answer at all
Most people don't pick up unknown numbers. Pew Research found 80% of US adults generally don't answer calls from unknown numbers, though 67% check the voicemail if one is left. Hiya's 2026 survey of more than 12,000 consumers puts unanswered unknown calls at 86%, and in 2023 more than 28% of the unknown calls Hiya analysed were spam or fraud.
What helps:
- Call people who expect you. Say in the form that you will call, and from which number.
- Try more than once, but not forever. Velocify reported that 93% of converted leads were reached by the sixth attempt. Spread attempts out and stop when someone asks you to.
- Don't overthink the hour. The same vendor found the best and worst times of day differed by only 2.6 percentage points in contact rate; speed and follow-up mattered more.
Saying it is an AI
Being honest has a cost and a benefit. A field experiment with more than 6,200 customers found that disclosing a bot before an outbound sales call cut purchases by more than 79.7%, although disclosing later reduced the effect. Most consumers say they want to be told, and in the EU it is becoming the law. SAGOT requires every agent to say it is an AI assistant: the right approach is to earn the conversation with relevance and speed, not to hide.
The rules for AI calls
This is a summary, not legal advice. Check the rules for every country you call.
| Where | What applies to AI calls |
|---|---|
| United States | The FCC confirmed in 2024 that AI-generated voices count as "artificial or prerecorded voice" under the TCPA, so these calls need the person's prior express consent. Telephone solicitations are limited to 8 a.m.–9 p.m. local time and may not go to numbers on the national Do Not Call Registry, which had 259 million active registrations in 2025. An FCC proposal to require AI disclosure at the start of each call is still pending. |
| European Union | Under the AI Act, people must be told they are interacting with an AI system at the latest at the first interaction; this applies from 2 August 2026. Data protection law also applies to recordings and transcripts. |
| United Kingdom | No marketing calls to numbers on the Telephone Preference Service without specific consent, and automated marketing calls with recorded content need prior consent. |
| Philippines | The Data Privacy Act requires a lawful basis, such as consent, for collecting and recording personal information, and the Anti-Wiretapping Act prohibits secretly recording a private conversation. Announce recording at the start of the call. |
How to run it in SAGOT
- Write the agent. Instructions, an AI greeting, the offer, up to 30 qualifying questions and the person who owns the follow-up.
- Set the calling policy. Calling hours and days in your workspace's time zone, the maximum attempts per contact (up to 5), automatic retries with growing gaps, a maximum call length, a budget and the disclosure statement.
- Import contacts and start. Call one person or run a campaign. Anyone who asks not to be called again can be suppressed, and SAGOT keeps a platform-wide do-not-call list.
- Read the results. Each attempt has a clear outcome (answered, no answer, ended before answer and more), a transcript, a recording and any handoff for your team.
New phone lines start in test mode, where only the line's test numbers can be called. Developers can automate everything through the API, MCP server and CLI; for clean contact lists, use the phone number checker, and draft the conversation with the call script generator.
Frequently asked questions
How fast should a lead be called?
As fast as you can within your calling rules. The research above found the chance of reaching and qualifying a lead drops sharply within the first hour.
How many times should an AI agent call a lead?
A handful of spaced attempts reaches most people who will answer. In SAGOT the limit is set per workspace, up to five attempts per contact, and retries wait progressively longer.
Do I need consent for AI calls?
In the US, AI-voice calls need prior express consent under the TCPA. Other countries have their own rules; calling people who asked to be contacted is the safest place to start.
Should the agent leave a voicemail?
Many people check voicemail from unknown numbers before calling back, so a short, identifiable message can help, where the rules you call under allow it.
