AI VOICE AGENTS BY ROLE

AI voice agents that call to make reservations

A reservation agent calls a restaurant, salon, clinic or any business that takes bookings by phone, asks for what you want — a table for four on Friday at 7, a haircut next week — and reports back exactly what the business said. It is useful where there is no online booking, where the online calendar is out of date, or where an AI assistant is planning something for a person and needs a human answer.

This has been done at scale

  • Google announced Duplex in May 2018 as a system for restaurant reservations, hair salon appointments and holiday hours over the phone. At the launch Google said 60% of US small businesses did not offer online booking (a keynote claim without published methodology).
  • After criticism that the first demo sounded too human, the greeting changed to: "Hi, I'm the Google Assistant calling to make a reservation for a client. This automated call will be recorded."
  • By October 2020 Google reported more than a million restaurant bookings through Duplex, and that 99% of its calls were fully automated (company-reported figures).
  • In July 2025 Google began rolling out AI calls to all US Search users, asking local businesses for pricing and availability on the user's behalf. Businesses can opt out of Google's automated calls in their Business Profile.

The lesson: people at the other end accept these calls when the caller says plainly what it is, who it calls for and that the call is recorded — and keeps the request short.

What a good reservation call sounds like

  1. Who and why, first. "Hi, I'm an AI assistant calling for a customer to ask about a table. This call is recorded."
  2. The request in one sentence. Date, time, party size, name for the booking.
  3. Flexibility it may offer. "Anything between 7 and 8 works", "outdoor if possible" — only what the person allowed.
  4. Read back what the business said. Confirmed, waitlisted, call back later, or no.
  5. Stop at the boundary. No deposits, card numbers or new commitments the person didn't approve; hand those to the person.

A request is not a confirmed booking until the business confirms it, and even then only what the business said is evidence. A good agent records "confirmed for 7:30, under Cruz, party of four" or "they only take walk-ins" — not "booked".

The rules

This is a summary, not legal advice.

Where What applies
United States The FCC confirmed in 2024 that AI-generated voices are "artificial or prerecorded voice" under the TCPA, which requires prior express consent for such calls to mobile numbers — including a business owner's mobile. Artificial-voice messages must state at the start who is responsible for the call and give a call-back number.
European Union People must be told they are interacting with an AI system at the latest at the first interaction, from 2 August 2026.
Everywhere Announce recording where the law requires consent to record, and stop calling a business that asks you not to.

How to run it in SAGOT

  1. Write the agent's job. Instructions with the request, what it may accept, the questions to ask and who follows up when the business needs a person.
  2. Disclosure is built in. Every SAGOT call says it is an AI and that it is recorded or transcribed before the conversation; if the business objects, the agent ends the call.
  3. Record the answer. The agent records the outcome and notes in its own words; with a connection it can send the result to your app or calendar, and a transcript shows exactly what was said.
  4. Let your AI assistant do it. Personal and business AI assistants can create the agent, place the call and read the result through the MCP server, API and CLI.

SAGOT is in a closed alpha. New phone lines start in test mode, where only the line's test numbers can be called, so calls to businesses outside your test list aren't available yet. Join the waitlist to try it as it opens up.

Frequently asked questions

In general yes, if the call says it is automated and who it is for, and follows the local rules. In the US, calls to a mobile number with an AI voice need prior consent, so prefer the business line the business publishes for bookings.

Will the restaurant know it's an AI?

It should. Google changed Duplex to announce itself after criticism, and the EU AI Act requires it. SAGOT speaks an AI and recording disclosure in every call.

Can a business stop AI booking calls?

Yes. Any business can ask the caller to stop, and Google lets businesses opt out of its automated calls in their Business Profile. A SAGOT agent ends the call on objection, and a workspace can mark the number never to be called again.

Is a phone reservation by an AI confirmed?

Only if the business confirms it on the call, and the record should say exactly what they said. Keep the transcript, and treat anything else as a request.
